FAQ

  • The demo is contained in a zip file. Unzip the file and run the application to play.
  • Note that you may need to bypass any popups that warn you that the application isn’t from a trusted developer.

It’s been reported that some antivirus software might cause a “Couldn’t start” windows error. We’ll be sure to look into this, though it seems to affect other games using the same engine.

In the meantime you can look at getting your antivirus software to allow Brief Battles to run. You can also look at disabling your antivirus software at your own risk and perhaps run Windows Defender instead. *Please note* we do not grant any warranty for damages done if you disable your antivirus software.

So far the demo build has been tested with Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers.

Note there have been issues reported of Xbox One controllers used with the wireless adapter having connectivity issues. We’ll work out closer to the PC release.

If you only have PS4 controllers, you can run a free application called Input Mapper before starting the game, your computer should pick up the controllers correctly. The download is only 8mb and can be downloaded here: https://inputmapper.com/.

Official support for other controllers will come in future versions.

Right now the Kickstarter Beta has basic keyboard support for player one. Other players will need controllers to play.

Please note that this is really basic implementation, with all GUI showing controller icons and no remapping options. We’ll extend PC support significantly in future versions.

Negative.

Our plan with Brief Battles is to create a fantastic couch gaming experience. Brief Battles will launch without online play. Online functionality may be considered in the future, though it’s not currently planned.

Info & Known Issues

Required Specifications:

Unreal Engine recommends the following, though we’ve added some super low settings and have been able to run the game on much lower end machines (mobile GPU’s etc.)

Windows 7 64-bit or Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later Quad-core Intel or AMD processor, 2.5 GHz or faster NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series card or higher 8 GB RAM

Kickstarter Beta:

  • Please note that in the game settings “Only Safe Arenas” is turned on by default. In the future this will turn off after a few matches, but right now you’ll need to manually turn it off to see all arenas.
  • Before starting a match, ensure that joined players have filled slots sequentially, i.e. P1, P2, and P3 are ok. P1, P2, and P4 won’t work in this version.

Alpha Demo:

  • You’ll need game controllers to play. Keyboard is not supported in current version. The demo build has been tested with Xbox 360 and wired Xbox One controllers.
  • You’ll need 2-4 people to play the unlocked game modes. It’s always a heap more fun with 3-4 players!
  • Before starting a match, ensure that joined players have filled slots sequentially, i.e. P1, P2, and P3 are ok. P1, P2, and P4 won’t work in this version.
  • Tip: The tester instruction video that plays at the beginning of every match is skippable by clicking in the right stick. This video will be removed in future builds, but is in place for new players.
  • It’s rare but possible for a match timer to not start, or for a player to not respawn. The first will need you to leave the match, the second will resolve itself in the next round.
  • It may be possible to have an incorrect winner for ‘Knockout’ if two players are knocked out in quick succession.
  • Current demo versions only fully support 16:9 resolutions. The full game will feature more aspect ratio support.
  • It’s been reported that some antivirus software might cause a “Couldn’t start” windows error. We’ll be sure to look into this, though it seems to affect other games using the same engine.
  • *Important note* if you’re playing any version of Brief Battles (or any other Unreal Engine game) you might encounter a weird green and pink screen flickering issue. It’s related to recent Nvidia drivers. There’s a fix for it mentioned on the Fortnite forums: epicgames.com
